Get ready for... Walk the Wight 2008
Registrations are open now for Walk the Wight 2008, which takes place this year on Sunday 18th May. This is the largest sponsored walk in the South and walks across the breadth of the Isle of Wight raising money for the Island's Hospice which cares for over 800 terminally ill patients every year. In 2007 over 5,000 people Walked the Wight raising over £217,000 towards patient care. It is a lovely walk across some of the Island's most beautiful hills and countryside, predominantly on footpaths. On the main Walk The Wight you have a choice of three distances -
The route is well marshalled with checkpoints, toilets and water points along the way. Food and coffee is available at Bembridge, Carisbrooke and the Needles Park. Registration is Free until April 30th. Register online now. For full details on distances, times and travel please visit www.walkthewight.org.uk New for 2008 - The 'Flat Walk'If you would like to Walk for the Island's Hospice but don't fancy the hills, then the new Flat Walk The Wight is for you. It takes place on Sunday 18th May, 2008 - the same day as Walk the Wight. The Flat Walk the Wight is 8 miles long and takes place mainly along cycle tracks (which used to form the old railway line). It starts at Sandown High School and finishes at Thompsons Shide Trees outside Newport. The Walk will be marshalled, with a check point at Merstone after 5 miles, which will have water, toilets and toilets for the disabled. Shuttle buses, courtesy of Southern Vectis, will bring finishers back to the start. For people who want to walk shorter distances there are access points at Lower Knighton, Horringford and Blackwater. Gates will be open along the cycle track, so it will be suitable for baby buggies and rugged wheelchairs. Please be aware that it is a gravel surface and not paved flat. Full details on distances, times and travel at www.walkthewight.org.uk or click here to register for the Flat Walk now. Only pre-registered walkers can take part. Click here to register free online before April 30th. Your walkers pack, including your walker number, instructions and sponsorship form will be sent to you.
