National Veterans Day
On Wednesday
27th June the Island paid homage to its war veterans as part of the events
marking this year's National Veteran's Day. A church service, parade and
a series of military displays saw nearly 400 veterans packing into the
centre of Newport to attend the afternoon of events scheduled in their
honour.
National Veterans Day is a celebration across the country of the contribution
made by all those who have served in the Armed Forces, as well as those
in Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who have served in support of operations,
as well as a means of raising public awareness of veterans' issues.
From processions to presentations
The event took
the form of a civic procession to St Thomas' Church in Newport where a
short service was held in the presence of HM Lord-Lieutenant Major General
Martin White, The Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Roger
Mazillius and the High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, Lt Col David Langford.
This was followed by a march past with the salute being taken by HM Lord-Lieutenant.
The Band of the Royal Logistic Corps were on hand throughout the proceedings
to play in the Church, during the parade and at The Quay.
The march drew
to a close at The Quay where several presentations were made. HM Lord-Lieutenant,
the Chairman and the High Sheriff issued the Veterans Badge to around
30 ex-service personnel, who served prior to 1984. Island resident Kenneth
Kendall, who was one of the first television newsreaders, provided spectators
with a running commentary and brief biographical history of each of the
recipients.
A time for reflection & enlightenment
A
series of military displays and stalls were also available at The Quay
for people to browse until early evening. This included stands from the
Royal Navy, the RAF, Royal British Legion and the Isle of Wight Military
History Museum. There was also a chance for anyone interested in becoming
a member of the armed forces to pick up information on careers. Unfortunately
a previously scheduled fly-past of several RAF Nimrods had to be cancelled
owing to mechanical problems with one of the planes.
Chairman
of Isle of Wight Council Roger Mazillius said "It is a true honour to
be involved in marking National Veterans Day here on the Island. It is
particularly poignant as this year the nation also marks the 25th anniversary
of the Falklands War. Our armed forces put their lives on the line to
defend our freedom, and honouring our veterans is the least we can do".
HM Lord-Lieutenant Major General Martin White said "This is a special
day for the Island's armed forces veterans. They deserve any accolade
they receive and I am very pleased to have been a part of the day".
This year's Veterans Day also provided Islanders with a special opportunity
to reflect upon the sacrifices made by our British soldiers who are still
involved in the continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan today; a
situation which ensures that we are all aware of the cost of war - whatever
the decade.
